Sharing knowledge for a Climate Proof future

Within the Climate Proof Areas (CPA) project organisations from the Netherlands, Great-Britain, Germany, Sweden and Belgium work together on a mutual cause: adapting the North Sea Region to the effects of climate change. These 5 partner countries develop new and innovative methods to render ten threatened areas 'climate proof'.

Four areas in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands, two in the German district of Wesermarsch, one in the Swedish city of Arvika and three in Great-Britain. Each area is unique and remarkable, full of wonderful fauna and flora and all are threatened by rising water levels and other effects caused by climate change.

The CPA partners investigate the different effects of climate change on these areas. They gather information on current government policies, test the foreseen adaptation measurements and administer improvements and new policy advice. By doing so the CPA partners want to assure a flexible and adaptive future for the North Sea Region.

Our climate is changing and this is affecting the water management: extreme wet or extreme dry weather conditions occur more frequently and water levels are rising. The CPA partners aren't awaiting the consequences, they are proactively and preventatively working on adequate adaptation measures.

The joined countries don't want to face these threats on their own. That's why various partner organizations from 5 North Sea Region countries joined forces in a transnational cooperation: Climate Proof Areas. The project was launched at the end of 2008 and continues until the end of 2011.
